A man sets out into the world to rescue a young woman from the clutches of a sadistic man called the Commander. Around him, a climate catastrophe is raging triggered by a world war's weapons of mass destruction. Permafrost and glaciers cover larger and larger parts of the globe.
 
The novel has been read as feminist, ecocritical and post-apocalyptic science fiction, disaster novel, novel nouveau, cold war thriller and as an allegory of the author's own heroin addiction, but it is first and foremost highly unstable, superimposing layer upon layer of unreality and projecting a dream-like and dystopian universe.
